This explains what the app records when you use it, who can see it, and the choices you have. It applies to everybody who uses the app: players, with or without an account, and the people who run the courses in it.

The short version

  • You can score a round without an account and without giving us any details at all.
  • The courses you play only ever see counts. Never your name, email address, phone number or scorecard.
  • We only contact you if you say yes, and offers from courses and news about the app are two separate choices.
  • We hold your information, not the courses. You can see it, correct it or have it deleted.

What the app records

When you score a round

We record the course, the day and time you started, the names on the card as you typed them, each player’s score on each hole, and whether the round was finished. A first name or a nickname is plenty: nobody on a card needs to give their full name.

Without an account

A round played without an account is recorded against a guest sign-in, not against you. When you score your first round, your phone or browser is given a random guest code and a random device code. Neither says anything about who you are. They keep your rounds together, save them so a lost signal never loses a score, and count them towards the course’s figures, like any other round.

With an account

We hold your email address and your password. The password is stored scrambled, so nobody can read it, us included. We also hold the rounds you save, your two choices about hearing from us, and anything else you choose to add in Preferences: your name, a phone number, an address or postcode, the people you usually play with, and a home course and town. None of the optional details is needed to score a round.

If you make an account after playing as a guest, the rounds you scored as a guest move to your account.

Emails we send you

To check an email address is yours, and to let you log in without a password, we email you a 6-digit code and a link. We also email you if a venue invites you to help run it. We don’t track whether you open these emails or tap their links.

Your location

Only if you allow it, and only to show you the courses near you in order of distance. It is used there and then. We do not keep a record of where you have been.

If you run a course

We hold the email address you sign in with, the claim you made for your venue, and the changes you make to your listing, your holes and pars and your offers. We keep a record of who changed what, and when.

Keeping the app safe

Our providers keep short-lived logs, which include IP addresses, to keep the service running and to stop misuse. We may ask Cloudflare to check that a sign-up comes from a person, not a program. Cloudflare then sees your IP address and some details of your browser.

What a course can see

A course only ever sees counts. Never a name, an email address or a phone number, and never one person’s scorecard.

A course can see

  • Can see: How many rounds were played on its courses, and when: by month, by day of the week and by the hour
  • Can see: How many players were on those cards, and the average group size
  • Can see: How many cards were saved to an account, and how many rounds were finished
  • Can see: How many people said yes to offers from it, as a number

A course never sees

  • Never sees: Anybody’s name, email address, phone number or postcode
  • Never sees: Anybody’s card, score or position
  • Never sees: Who played, who came back, or how often they came back
  • Never sees: Which of its players said yes to offers
  • Never sees: Who a player is, when its staff scan a player’s code: they see the offers on it and nothing else

Why

People score a round for themselves and the people they came with. If a course could look over their shoulder, they would stop using the app, and then nobody would have the numbers. Counts are enough to run a course well: when it is busy, which course people choose, and whether they finish it.

Your account and your two choices

When you make an account you are asked two separate questions, each with its own switch. Offers from courses starts switched on and updates start switched off, and you can change either before you make the account. Saying no to either changes nothing else about the app.

  • Offers from courses. Discounts and opening deals from courses you have played and courses near you.
  • Updates about the app. A short email when something new lands. A few a year at most, and never your scores.

You can change either one at any time in Preferences, and the change takes effect straight away.

How offers from courses work

A course never contacts you itself. If you have said yes to offers from courses, a course can ask us to send an offer, and we send it to the people who said yes. The course is told how many people it went to. It does not get your details, and it cannot find out who received it.

Every offer says why you are getting it and how to stop. Turning off Offers from courses in Preferences stops them all.

An offer shown on a course’s page in the app is different: it is there for everybody who opens that page, and looking at it sends nothing about you to the course.

Who holds your information

We do. Your information is held by the app, not by the courses you play. Courses are not given access to our records, and we do not sell your information or pass it to anybody to market to you.

The app is run by Alex Pink. We use a small number of service providers, and they work only on our instructions:

  • Supabase holds the accounts, the rounds and everything else the app saves, and handles signing in. Its servers for us are in London.
  • Resend sends our emails: codes, links and invites. It sends them from Ireland, in the EU.
  • Vercel hosts the app. The part that talks to our database runs in London, and pages may come from the server nearest to you.
  • OpenStreetMap draws the map. Its servers see your IP address and the part of the map you are looking at.
  • Cloudflare, if we switch it on, checks that sign-ups come from people.

Some of these companies are based in the United States. Where your information could reach them, it is protected by the safeguards UK law requires for sending information abroad.

Sharing a result

Sharing a result makes a link with an address nobody could guess. Anybody with the link can see the players’ first names, their scores, the course and the venue, and so can any service that turns the link into a preview. Surnames are never shown. Share it with the people you played with, or with people you are happy to show.

What stays on your device

The app keeps what it needs on your device, in your browser’s storage: your rounds, so scoring works without a signal, the random device code, and your settings. Signing in uses cookies that keep you logged in, which the app needs to work. We do not use advertising cookies, and there is no tracking by other companies.

Signing out removes your saved rounds from that device; they stay on your account. Clearing your browser’s data for the app removes everything from that device.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and your rounds until you delete your account, which you can do yourself in Preferences. When an account is deleted, your details go straight away. Its rounds stay only in the courses’ counts: every name on them becomes “Player 1”, “Player 2” and so on, and the links to you and your device are removed. Any invite to help run a venue goes too, and so does a claim for a venue that has not been decided. A claim that has been decided keeps only the venue and the outcome, not your name or contact details.

Without an account, a guest sign-in is kept until 90 days after it was last used. After that it is deleted, and the names on its cards are changed in the same way. The rounds stay only in the courses’ counts.

Records of the emails we send, and of the changes made by the people who run courses, are kept for as long as we need them to run the app safely.

Your rights

You can see and correct your details, download a copy of everything we hold about your account, and delete your account, all in Preferences. You can also ask us by email. You can tell us to stop sending you offers or updates at any time, and you do not have to give a reason.

If you are not happy with how we have handled your information, tell us first and we will put it right if we can. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes to this policy

If we change what the app records or who can see it, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects what we do with information you have already given us, we will tell you before it takes effect.
